The Cornerstone Development Authority

Welcome to the Cornerstone Development Authority (CDA) home page. The CDA is a Downtown Development Authority under state statute (1975 PA 197). The Cornerstone Development Authority was established in 1988 to reverse the trend of declining property values and conditions in Southeastern Southfield. It is a member of the Business Development Team and also is active with the Southfield Area Chamber of Commerce. The Cornerstone Development Authority consists of a 13-member Board of Directors and is staffed by two full-time employees.

In 2000, the Cornerstone Development Authority designated the area within its boundaries as the Cornerstone District – Southfield. This special District is undergoing dramatic improvements to establish a campus-like setting and help maintain the prosperity District residents are experiencing.

Cornerstone Development Authority Mission

To enhance the environment by making the area one in which people feel comfortable and secure as a place to live, work, shop, learn and be entertained and to strengthen the economic vitality and physical appearance.

The Cornerstone Development Authority is working hard to improve the Cornerstone District through the following efforts:

  • Property Acquisition, Redevelopment and Renovation: The Cornerstone Development Authority is active in acquiring undesirable properties with a negative impact on the community. The CDA arranges to clear sites and works with developers to establish new, quality projects to strengthen the local economy. The Cornerstone Development Authority has undertaken several renovation projects, most recently with the Millennium Centre; and also assists in redevelopment and renovation projects undertaken by other parties, to help ensure their success.

  • Landscaping and Infrastructure Projects: The Cornerstone Development Authority works to beautify the District with an aggressive landscaping program; district-wide maintenance; landscaping grants for property owners; and projects to provide new lighting, signage and sidewalks. The Cornerstone Development Authority partners with the City of Southfield, Road Commission for Oakland County, Michigan Department of Transportation and private interests to help beautify The Cornerstone District; and to create an environment more pleasing to residents, motorists and pedestrians.

  • Events and Promotions: Throughout the year, the Cornerstone Development Authority sponsors district events, including the summer "Lunch on the Lawn" series and annual winter holiday program at Northland Center. The Cornerstone Development Authority operates the newly-renovated Millennium Centre, a first-class theater venue for stage productions.

  • Current Projects and Activities: The Cornerstone Development Authority has several ongoing projects including the installation of an entryway marker on the corner of Mt. Vernon and Greenfield. A district entryway sign will be constructed in the near future. New developments in the district can be viewed on our CDA District Map and legend. The Cornerstone Development Authority along with the City of Southfield is working on landscaping J.L. Hudson Dr., Nine Mile and Providence Dr. which should be completed in fall 2006.
